Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 29, 2026
This Privacy Policy describes how Neil Broere ("we," "us," or "Unfold") collects, uses, shares, and protects information when you use the Unfold mobile application on iOS and Android and the website at unfoldbible.app (together, the "Service"). By using the Service you agree to the practices described here.
We built Unfold to keep your reading and your journal private. We collect as little as we can, we do not sell your data, and we do not use your journal or your Scribe conversations to advertise to you.
1. Information we collect
The categories below cover everything the Service may collect. They correspond to the disclosures we make in the Apple App Store privacy labels and the Google Play Data safety section.
- Account information. Your email address and a hashed password. If you use Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google, we receive an account identifier and the email address you choose to share (which may be a private relay address).
- Subscription and purchase information. Purchases are processed by Apple through the App Store or by Google through Google Play. We receive only what those platforms share with us — such as a subscription status token, product identifier, and purchase date. We never receive or store your full payment card details.
- Reading progress. The dates and passages you read, so we can keep your place in the reading plan across devices.
- Journal entries, notes, highlights, and bookmarks. Content you create, stored and synced to your account so it is available on any device you sign in to. If you attach a voice memo or image to a journal entry, that file is stored with the entry.
- Scribe interactions. The prompts you send to the in-app Scribe and the responses it returns. See Section 4.
- Device and diagnostic data. Crash logs, device model, operating-system version, app version, and aggregated, non-identifying usage analytics that help us diagnose problems and improve the app.
- Support correspondence. Messages you send us and the information you include in them.
- Optional notifications. If you enable reading reminders, we store a device push token so we can deliver them. You can turn this off at any time in your device settings.
What we do not collect. We do not collect precise location, contacts, photos (other than an image you deliberately attach), health data, or biometric data. We do not use advertising identifiers, we do not run third-party advertising, and we do not build advertising profiles.
2. How we use information
- To provide, maintain, secure, and improve the Service.
- To sync your reading progress, journal, and preferences across your devices.
- To process subscriptions and respond to support requests.
- To diagnose bugs, prevent fraud and abuse, and protect the integrity of the Service.
- To send transactional messages such as receipts, account notices, or critical service updates. We send marketing email only if you ask for it, and every marketing email includes an unsubscribe link.
- To comply with legal obligations.
3. Legal bases for processing (EEA and UK users)
If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we process your personal data on these legal bases:
- Performance of a contract — to give you the Service you signed up for, including sync and subscription management.
- Legitimate interests — to keep the Service secure, diagnose faults, and improve how it works, balanced against your rights.
- Consent — for optional features such as push notifications and marketing email. You can withdraw consent at any time.
- Legal obligation — where we must retain records for tax, accounting, or law-enforcement reasons.
4. The Scribe (AI features)
Unfold includes an in-app study companion called the Scribe. When you send it a message, that message is transmitted over an encrypted connection to a third-party large-language-model provider that generates a response on our behalf.
- The Scribe is a study aid. It is not a counselor, pastor, physician, lawyer, or crisis service, and it is not a substitute for any of them. If you are in crisis, contact your local emergency number or a qualified professional.
- We instruct our model provider not to train models on your Scribe messages, and we enable zero data retention where the provider supports it.
- We store a copy of your recent Scribe conversations in your account so you can revisit them. You can delete any conversation from within the app at any time.
- Scribe responses can be incomplete or wrong. Verify any factual claim against Scripture and trusted sources.
Reporting. Every Scribe response includes a report control. If a response is offensive, inaccurate, or otherwise inappropriate, report it from inside the conversation and it comes straight to our team for review. You can also email support@unfoldbible.app.
- Please do not enter sensitive personal information about yourself or anyone else into the Scribe.
5. How we share information
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We share data only with the service providers needed to operate the Service, each bound by contract to protect it:
- Hosting, database, storage, and authentication providers.
- Our large-language-model provider, to generate Scribe responses.
- Apple and Google, for app distribution, purchases, subscriptions, and (if you choose) Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google.
- Crash-reporting and analytics providers, for diagnostics.
- Email and customer-support providers, to answer you.
- Authorities or other parties, when required by law or when necessary to protect rights, safety, or the integrity of the Service.
- A successor entity, if Unfold is ever involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets. We will notify you before your data becomes subject to a different privacy policy.
6. Third-party content
Unfold displays Scripture from third-party translations including the New American Standard Bible® (NASB), used by permission of The Lockman Foundation, and the King James Version. Use of those texts is governed by the rights holders' terms.
7. Data retention
We retain your account data while your account is active. If you delete your account, we delete your reading progress, journal entries, highlights, and Scribe history from our production systems within 30 days, and from encrypted backups within 90 days. We may retain limited records longer where required for legal, tax, or fraud-prevention purposes. Aggregated, de-identified data that cannot reasonably be linked back to you may be retained indefinitely.
8. Your rights and choices
Everyone, everywhere, can do the following:
- Edit or delete journal entries and notes from within the app.
- Delete any Scribe conversation from within the app.
- Export your journal from Settings → Journal → Export.
- Turn notifications, analytics, and crash reporting off in your device settings.
Delete your account and all associated data in the app at Settings → Account → Delete Account, or from the web at [unfoldbible.app/support](/support) without reinstalling the app.
Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to access a copy of your personal data, correct it, delete it, restrict or object to processing, withdraw consent, receive your data in a portable format, and — for EEA and UK users — lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority. California residents have the rights to know, delete, correct, and to opt out of sale or sharing (we do neither), and we will not discriminate against you for exercising any right.
To make a request, email privacy@unfoldbible.app. We respond within 30 days and may need to verify your identity — usually by confirming control of the email address on the account. You may use an authorized agent where the law allows it.
9. Children
Unfold is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or under 16 in the EEA and UK, where that higher age applies). If you believe a child has given us personal information, email privacy@unfoldbible.app and we will delete it promptly. The Service is not designed for or targeted at families or children under Google Play's Families policy.
10. Security
We protect your data with industry-standard safeguards, including encryption in transit (TLS) and encryption at rest, hashed passwords, access controls limiting who on our side can reach production data, and regular dependency updates. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. If we become aware of a breach affecting your personal data, we will notify you and the relevant authorities as required by law.
11. International users and transfers
Unfold is operated from the United States. If you use the Service from outside the United States, your information will be transferred to and processed in the United States and other countries whose data-protection laws may differ from those where you live. Where we transfer personal data out of the EEA or UK, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses.
12. Platform disclosures
- Apple App Store. Our App Store privacy labels reflect the categories in Section 1. Purchases and subscriptions are handled by Apple under Apple's own privacy policy.
- Google Play. Our Play Data safety disclosures reflect the same categories. Data is encrypted in transit, you can request deletion of your data, and we do not share your data with third parties for advertising. Purchases and subscriptions are handled by Google under Google's own privacy policy.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above and, for material changes, notify you in the app or by email before the change takes effect.
14. Contact
Questions, requests, or concerns about this policy? Email privacy@unfoldbible.app. You can also write to us by post — email us and we will provide the current mailing address. We are the data controller for the personal data described here.
